When Your Situation Is Complicated
Not everyone fits a standard pathway
Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming: we recognise autism as variation in the human experience, and our goal is to help you understand your strengths, communicate your needs to others, and build a life that fits who you are.
We specialise in complex presentations where standard assessment pathways fall short. We offer clinical depth and compassion to understand you, and ensure working with me is informative and useful. You may have other issues that complicate the picture, such as trauma or communication differences. If you need an assessor who can hold your complexity, work with you flexibly, at your pace – connect.

Understanding Autism
Autism and related issues represent a difference in how we process information, experience the world, and relate to others. Current understanding recognises autistic traits as variation in human neurology rather than deficits. We can conceptualise human development as a developmental pathway made up of natural neurological features and life experiences that shape who we are as adults.
Neurodiverse individuals demonstrate strengths such as pattern recognition, systematic thinking, attention to detail, and capacity for deep focus, while sometimes feeling challenged by social situations, unspoken elements of relationships, or recognising emotion. Differences in processing sensory information, social cues, and executive function reflect alternate neurological architecture rather than broken systems. The challenges autistic people experience are real, but many difficulties result from living in environments designed for neurotypical people.
Many neurodiverse people mask traits to appear non-autistic in social situations, usually developed through careful observation and conscious effort. Sustained masking can lead to exhaustion, anxiety, and loss of identity. Autism manifests differently than stereotypes suggest. While diagnostic criteria focus on social communication differences and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, lived experience is more nuanced.
Key Features
Social Communication
- Difficulty understanding unspoken rules, social cues and body language.
- Challenges in forming and maintaining relationships, or socialising in groups.
- Verbal and non-verbal communication struggles, sometimes speaking in rhythm and intonation other people label as unusual.
Repetitive Behaviours & Routines
- Preference for routines, clear rules, and consistency.
- Repetitive movements or behaviours (stimming), such as hand-flapping or rocking as a way to manage stress.
- Intense interest in specific subjects or activities, often to expert level.
Sensory Sensitivities
- Over-or under-sensitivity to certain inputs like sound, light, texture, or smell.
- Needing to manage sensory experiences, such as covering ears to prevent noise.
